Human Bondage | | James
Bond is more than just a man, more even than a secret agent: James Bond is an
eternal truth. To quote the Sunday Times book review of On Her Majesty's
Secret Service, Bond is what every man would like to be, and what every woman
would like between her sheets.' As Bond's creator Ian Fleming himself said: "The
target of my books lay somewhere between the solar plexus and the upper thigh." |
| | | Bond,
James Bond | | It
is so often the case that discussion about James Bond focuses on everything except
James Bond. People yearn to talk of his cars, his gadgets, his girls, his cocktails.
All of these are, of course, rich seams for the bluffer to mine. But your most
precious stone, your most glittering diamond (one that is indeed forever) has
to be the little-tackled -question of Bond's identity. Master this, and your bluffing
will sweep all before it.
| A
Bond with Archer | Connecting
Bond to Jeffrey Archer has the attraction of planting an eye-catching flower in
already fertile soil. There seems to be a natural linkage between the two: Archer's
thriller novels have, like the Bond novels, sold by the million, while on a more
provocative note you can hint at the notion of a fantasy life where little is
as it seems. The actual link, however, is much more concrete. The
answer can be found on page 007
| High
spirits | | In
the book, Casino Royale, Bond (as a tribute to Vesper Lynd) gives her name
to a new cocktail, a martini containing both gin and vodka. Like his famous vodka
martini, he takes it shaken not stirred. Vesper herself seems to have both effects. |

Brooke Bond | | The
truly accomplished bluffer knows how to play the odds. Scanning the social horizon
before him, he selects those points where his subject will stand the highest statistical
chance of being introduced, then prepares accordingly. We advise you to take this
approach with Bond. Where do you bluff? You bluff where people gather. What do
people do when they gather? They eat and drink. Tell them what Bond eats and drinks,
and you'll have them in your thrall.
