The Bluffer's Guide to Stocks and Shares
By Anne Gordon

Extracts from the book

Market value
To encourage existing shareholders to take up their rights, new shares are frequently priced at a discount to the current market value. Although this looks like a bargain, it is a bluff. Remember you cannot buy what you already own - you are not buying more shares cheaply, you are contributing extra capital into the company.

Stock markets
There are dozens of stock markets but it is acceptable to concentrate on the big three: New York, London and Tokyo. This shows you appreciate where the real money is. If anyone calls your bluff, remind them that the whole of the Moscow stock market is worth less than single leading US blue chip.

Options
You don't have to win money at the races, or shares to make profits on the markets. Options allow you to gamble that a share will go up or down, without having to bother with real equities.

Jargon
You don't need to understand City dealing methods before you can buy and sell shares, any more than you need to know how car engines work in order to pass your driving exam. But a few technical phrases can come in useful. They give the impression that you are familiar with the mechanics and will notice if you are being taken for a ride.
