The Bluffer's Guide to Tax
By A. J. Carroll

Extracts from the book

Tax bills
Individual tax losses are a bluffer's delight. Can you convince the Revenue that your expensive hobby is a loss-making business, and thus reduce your overall tax bill? To succeed you will need to show you tried to make profits, but if you make losses for too many years, the inspector will call your bluff.

Complicated calculations
Small gains, up to an annual tax-free amount, are often excluded from tax. This is because the tax is so horribly complicated, even the Revenue do not want to work out the sums.

Unrealised gains
Gains can be either realised or unrealised. If you sell an asset at a profit, this is a realised gain. If the asset has gone up in value, but has not been sold, you have an unrealised gain. Such an asset can be described as 'pregnant with gains'. It means that gains exist but have not yet been delivered.

Capital allowance
Hundreds of cases on capital allowances have come to court. Many tell you little about tax but a lot about taxpayers' persistence and ingenuity. For example, the Revenue have succeeded in proving that stallions, wallpaper pattern books, floating restaurants, quarantine kennels, and inflatable tennis court covers are not plant and machinery.

Reviews

This little book, written by a tax adviser, is full of subtle humour and lateral thinking. Its value should not be underestimated, though, as it gives a readable explanation of all the main taxes and duties, laced with the right amount of humour.
Taxation

I was once told that the only certain things in life were death and taxes. Neither of which are funny. But The Bluffer's Guide to Tax is mortifyingly funny. Worth every penny and write it off too.
